Care Instructions
Congratulations! You've bought, or been gifted, a wonderful handmade item in a sustainable fibre. So how do you care for it so it lasts? Here are some tips:
Check your items care label. Some wool is machine washable. When in doubt, handwash the item.
- Start by soaking it in the sink in water with a mild detergent for handwashing.
- Gently massage the item to ensure detergent is absorbed but careful not to agitate or rub the item which can cause the fibres to break.
- Squeeze out excess soapy water and repeat in fresh water until water runs clear and bubbles are gone.
- Squeeze out excess water and lay flat on a towel.
- Roll item like a log in the towel while squeezing excess water out at the same time.
- Unroll the towel and lay the item flat and reshape to dry. Hanging will cause the item to stretch out of shape due to the weight when wet and a dryer will lead to shrinkage.
To conserve water, you can wash items in buckets and dispose the water in the garden. A challenge in Canadian winters but a great option for warmer days and climates. Soap can be a good thing for keeping bugs off plants too if you didn't know. Be sure the soap is eco friendly first (head over to Topsy Farms for a biodegradable option for handwashing wool).
Finally, be sure the bucket or sink is clean especially if it's the one for garden waste or brushing teeth before adding your wool items. But that never happened of course....
